ATF 2011 to Be Held on Cambodia Stampede Island

Phnom Penh, Cambodia: ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) is a cooperative regional effort to promote the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region as one tourist destination. This annual event involves all the tourism industry sectors of the 10 member nations of ASEAN: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Each year, the hosting of ATF is rotated among the member countries. Cambodia is the country which first hosted the ATF in 2003 at Siem Reap province. For ATF 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of this event since its inauguration in Malaysia in 1981. Cambodia will host ATF 2011 and is all geared up to welcome over 1,600 delegates which includes 400 international buyers and 100 international media.

The 30th ATF 2011 will be held in Phnom Penh at Diamand Island, Cambodia. It should be reminded that the Diamond Island (Koh Pich), where the saddest event called stampede accidentally happened on Diamond bridge (Spean Pich) in which over 300 people dead, and around 400 people injured. It's exactly that all ASEAN countries participants will visit and are eager to see the diamond bridge where caused hundred people dead.

During the event of ATF 2011, this will draw more visitors to Cambodia. Especially to see the Diamond Island, the place made the second stampede in the world.

.....
Below is the quoted welcome message of Minister of Tourism, Cambodia and the Chairman of ATF 2011 Host Committee:

On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Host Committee of the 30th ASEAN Tourism Forum, it is my great honour and pleasure to extend our cordial invitation to you to participate in the upcoming 30th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF 2011) to be held at the newly built Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Center, Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia from 15 to 21 January, 2011 under the theme of "ASEAN - A World of Wonders and Diversity".

We are proud and honoured for Phnom Penh capital to be chosen once again to host ATF. There has been a lot of development in infrastructure and facilities since Phnom Penh first hosted ATF in 2003. Siem Reap province, home of world heritage and the archeological sites, and Preah Sihanouk province, the most beautiful and pristine beach, have been selected for pre- and post-tours.

As host of ATF 2011, it is my great pleasure to warmly welcome all distinguished delegates and guests to ATF 2011 in Cambodia with our gracious hospitality and we wish you a great success and pleasant stay in Cambodia- Kingdom of Wonder.

Hun Sen, Cambodia PM Weeps for Koh Pich Stampede Dead

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 25 November 2010: Hun Sen, Cambodia's prime minister has wept at the place where hundreds died during a shocking stampede, as the country began a day of mourning for victims.

Hun Sen shed tears while he lit incense and candles at the narrow diamond bridge where tens of thousands of festival-goers panicked, trampling hundreds underfoot, on Monday.

There has been confusion over the exact number of deaths. The latest official casualty tally from the incident was 347 dead and 395 injured, down from earlier official figures.

The premier was joined at the Bassac River in the capital Phnom Penh by his wife Bun Rany and cabinet members. Flags throughout the country were flying at half-mast and a Buddhist ceremony was being held...

Do You Want to Research Enigmatic Angkor Girls???

Do You Want to Research Enigmatic Angkor Girls???

I think You also want to research the enigmatic of Angkor girls. How they are???

Apsara Angkor Wat

Read out the below:

Sleuth researches enigmatic Angkor girls

Michigan State University worked with Davis to devise a mathematical trait analysis system to be used at Angkor Wat.

Michigan State University worked with Davis to devise a mathematical trait analysis system to be used at Angkor Wat.

FLORIDA-based researcher, publisher and robot manufacturer Kent Davis is rapidly gaining an international reputation as the sleuth of Siem Reap, a new age detective delving into what he sees as one of the greatest mysteries of ancient Angkor Wat – the 1780 images of anonymous and mostly bare-breasted women depicted in carvings throughout the iconic structure.

Commonly known as apsaras (or, as Davis prefers, devatas), these female images were mostly accorded little significance.

But Davis, a former resident of Siem Reap and a regular visitor to Temple Town, is sure he’s onto something. He’s sure that these women represent something decidedly significant, but he’s not quite sure what.

Who are they, he asks, and why are there so many of them depicted throughout the great Khmer temple, not to mention other temples in the Angkorian complex?

Davis is now bristling with excitement because he has science on his side, and he’s certain that soon some answers will be revealed.
Davis himself is somewhat of a mystery man and his various recent biographies reveal little about his earlier life.

But on his LinkedIn profile he simply lists his education as “Maharishi University of Management 1974-1978”.

The profile also says that in May 2009 he became an executive board member of Heritage Watch International and that in 1979 he founded RoboMedia Inc, which “has used high visibility robot celebrities to market products and services. The ‘Electronic Personalities’ robots have fascinated Europeans and North Americans with tens of thousands of live performances”.

But the bio that Davis gave 7Days dealt only with his Cambodian period. In 2005, he began travelling to the Kingdom with his Thai wife Sophaphan Laothai, who he describes as “the Thai Martha Stewart”.

In 2007 the duo funded the construction of Srei Devata Middle School in Baray, Kompong Thom, through American Assistance for Cambodia.
Shortly after, Davis established DatAsia Press to publish significant literary, academic and educational works relating to Southeast Asian
and Khmer history.

The company also publishes a specialised “life skills” curricula for elementary school children called The Million Dollar Machine.

The vigorous little publishing house has released three interesting Angkor-related books: Dr Paul Cravath’s Earth in Flower: Mystery of the Cambodian Dance Drama; Helen Churchill Candee’s Angkor the Magnificent: Wonder City of Ancient Cambodia;

and a newly completed expanded edition of George Groslier’s 1913 book, Cambodian Dancers Ancient and Modern, featuring the first printed biography of the author.

Davis also set up Devata.org to study the “goddess” images at Angkor Wat to determine the historical role of Khmer women, and later this year will publish a book on this topic titled, Daughters of Angkor Wat.

Davis said the primary objective of his work “is completing a quantitative database of every woman honoured at Angkor Wat by tracking 65 characteristics for each carving. This will enable, for the first time in modern history, mathematical trait analysis among the entire complex population”.

To this end, in 2008 Davis initiated a cooperative facial pattern recognition study with Dr Anil Jain and his team at Michigan State University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Last week Davis issued a press release announcing that initial findings will be revealed by the MSU team on August 22 during the International
Conference on Pattern Recognition in Istanbul, Turkey.

Davis hails this as “the release of the world’s first scientific study of the devata, titled Clustering Face Carvings: Exploring the Devata of Angkor Wat”.

In Davis’s press release, he says, “Scientists at this year’s International Conference on Pattern Recognition will be considering one particularly captivating mystery: Who are the beautiful women portrayed in the 12th century temple of Angkor Wat?

“Angkor Wat contains the most extraordinary ancient portrait gallery in the world, and every subject honoured is a woman.”

Davis wraps up the release by saying, “Ultimately, this objective comparison tool could enhance anthropological, sociological and historical understanding of this and other ancient civilisations. With this new study, the ignored ancient women of Angkor Wat are one step closer
to claiming their royal status in world history.”

But not all archaeologists share Davis’s enthusiasm for the theory.

In February 2009, the Phnom Penh Post featured a news story about the involvement of Michigan State University in Davis’s research and few days later the Southeast Asian Archaeology Newsblog, responding to the Post’s article, carried an item saying, “His theory is that because of the thousands of apsara images that adorn the walls of the temples, Angkor was built to glorify women. Does it sound like a Da-Vinci-Code-sacred-feminine flavour transposed onto the Southeast Asian context to you?

“Of course, we should just ignore the architecture, the royal inscriptions and historical accounts that suggest that buildings of Angkor were temples
to Khmer gods.”

This sparked a spirited thread of comments from readers including a comment from someone called Nemi who said Davis’s theory was a “little bit like saying that the Playboy mansion is a tribute to women”.

Davis, of course, weighed in with a 2150-word defence of this theory.

And really, who can knock him? He’s a fascinating man with a fascinating theory, and whether he can prove it is open to question. But he’s touched on an aspect of the temples which, to date, has been mostly overlooked, and he’s at least created an interesting debate.

You Plan Your Trip to Cambodia: Kingdom of Wonder Yet?

The following article includes pertinent information that may cause you to reconsider what you thought you understood. The most important thing is to study with an open mind and be willing to revise your understanding if necessary.

The more authentic information about Visiting Cambodia you know, the more likely people are to consider you a Visiting Cambodia expert. Read on for even more Visiting Cambodia facts that you can share.

Most international visitors to Cambodia arrive by air at either Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. An increasing number of airlines are operating into Cambodia in response to the Cambodian governments open skies policy. The list of international airlines serving Cambodia includes; Bangkok Airways, China Southern Airlines, Dragonair, EVA Air, Lao Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, Mekong Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Siem Reap Airways International, Silk Air, Royal Phnom Penh Airways, Thai Airways International and Vietnam Airlines.

For transport to the city centre when arriving at Phnom Penh, you will find taxis outside the arrival hall. The taxi fare from the airport to the city is US$7 and the trip will take about 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

In Siem Reap the cost of a taxi into the town area from the airport is US$5. Many of the larger hotels will offer free transport so let your hotel know your flight arrival details in advance.

Overland travel to Cambodia is possible through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam via border crossings.

Travelling around Cambodia

Air travel, bus, train, boat and taxi are all modes of transport available to tourists in Cambodia. Your selection is best determined by how far you wish to travel, the time you have available, the amount you want to spend and, sometimes, by the weather as during the wet season travel by road especially in the provinces can be very slow.

For getting around the major centres such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, the most common form of public transport is the moto (motorbike taxi). The motos are fast, cheap (negotiate the price before your trip) and readily available however if you are unfamiliar with sitting as a passenger on a motorbike in heavy traffic, such as in Phnom Penh, then you may prefer an alternative mode.

The quaint cyclo is also common in the cities and is a safer more pleasant way of getting around compared to the moto, although obviously slower! Again, negotiate the price first.

For comfort and safety your best option may be to hire a car, with a driver, and this will cost you around US$20-$25 per day. Your hotel/guesthouse will usually be able to arrange a car for you.

Where to stay

There are accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets in Cambodia, from 5-star luxury hotels to inexpensive and friendly guesthouses. Please click on our Accommodation link to see an extensive list.

Currency / Banks / Credit Cards

The official currency of Cambodia is the Riel however US dollars are widely accepted; in fact many businesses set their prices in US dollars. It is however wise to carry some riel around with you for small purchases. The current exchange rate for the riel to the US$ is around 4000 riel = US$1.

The acceptance of credit cards is increasing in Cambodia and you can get cash advances against your credit card at some major commercial banks. There are however no ATMs that will provide access to foreign bank accounts. Click on the link for a full list of commercial banks in Cambodia.

Climate

Cambodia has a tropical climate that is warm and humid. In the monsoon season, abundant rain allows for the cultivation of a wide variety of crops and this year round tropical climate makes Cambodia ideal for the tourism industry. Visitors do need not fear natural disasters such as erupting volcanoes or earthquakes, and the country is not directly affected by tropical storms.

Cambodia can be visited throughout the year. However those planning to travel extensively by road should avoid the last two months of the rainy season when some countryside roads may be impassable.

The climate can generally be described as tropical. As the country is affected by monsoon, it is hot and humid with an overage temperature around 27.C (80.F) but in the dry season it is cool and very much like a European summer.

There are two distinct seasons: the Rainy Season and the Dry Season. However, the Dry Season is divided into two sub-seasons, cool and hot and these seasons are:

The Rainy season:
From June till October 27-35.C (80-95.f)

The Dry season (cool):
From November till February 17-27.C (80-95.F)

The Dry season (Hot) :
From March till May 29-38.C (84-100.F)

Cambodia is one of the few countries that visitors can enjoy all the year round.

So now you know a little bit about Visiting Cambodia. Even if you don't know everything, you've done something worthwhile: you've expanded your knowledge.
